Technological changes and
advances in sheet metal industry work requires increasingly higher
levels of workers in all phases of the building construction
industry. If you like to
build things, a job in sheet metal is for you.
You'll work with one of the most versatile materials in construction —
metal. You'll immediately earn a living wage, benefits, pension plan, steady work, and as a
member of a local union, gain a voice in a organization that looks
out for you and your fellow workers. iTi’s curricula have been
evaluated for college credit by the American Council on Education, and apprentices get credit toward an
Associates degree as they complete their apprenticeship.
Sheet metal workers are involved with the applications of all types of sheet
metal. Job opportunities are diverse and may include fabrication, installation
and maintenance of heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems
as well as gutters, roofing, siding, or food service equipment. Architectural
sheet metal workers' fabricate and install brass and copper ornamentation,
columns, skylights, signs and metal ceilings that add beauty to commercial
and residential buildings.
The union sheet metal worker may be involved with Architectural Sheet Metal — brass
and copper ornamentation, columns, skylights, signs and metal ceilings, and downspouts.
Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning — design, fabricate,
and install. Testing, Adjusting and Balancing — fine tuning and maintaining
HVAC components. Use of Computers — to fabricate sheet metal products
and troubleshoot HVAC systems. Health and Safety and Environmental training.
Food and Beverage — Stainless steel fabrication and installation in restaurants,
cafeterias etc. Welding — fusing different types of metal using the latest
technological processes. Service Work — installing, maintaining and repair
of equipment that conditions air. Siding and Decking — rigging and installation
of building components relating to floors and walls. Pattern Development— development
of patterns for objects to be constructed.
Apprenticeship
requires a high school or GED diploma. Some areas of the U.S. and Canada may
require written exams and/or personal interviews to enter the apprenticeship.
The industry needs willing young people with the desire and aptitude to listen,
learn and become skilled craftsmen who want to develop job-related skills and
career goals.
Sheet Metal workers are in good physical condition. They have above average
mechanical and mathematical skills. They possess good eye-hand coordination,
spatial/form perception and manual dexterity. They like working with both their
hands and minds. They want to learn. Their personalities include patience,
dependability, accuracy, ability to get along with others in a team atmosphere,
and enjoy seeing a job come to its completion.
